What is the Children’s Learning Reading?

My personal experience with the program

Knowing that my child would learn to read by sounding out words and decoding them through phonics and phonemic awareness upped my confidence in the program. It makes more sense than having them “memorize” word shapes.

As mentioned previously, the program won’t be effective if your child doesn’t even know how to speak yet. There are instances when children might be too young to start on the program, but you can certainly help build up their phonemic awareness skills.

The creator of the program, Jim Yang, shared that even his son started learning phonemic awareness when he was a little over a year old. By the time he was 2.5 years old, he had developed excellent phonemic awareness skills.

What did I do?

I helped my child develop his skills through play and kept “learning” to a minimum. Meanwhile, my child still had the time to continue to play, grow, explore, and discover the world around him.

By the time he was a little over 2 years old, he was familiar with his alphabets and could even pronounce most of the letter sounds, which was quite impressive to me. I can tell that by having the lessons revolve around play, he was becoming an enthusiastic learner.

Does it work?

I can confidently say that Children Learning Reading works. It’s quite the feeling to see my child joyfully soaked up in his lessons. He loved the lessons in Stage 1 and would constantly play with the printouts that they ended up so crumpled and worn. Each lesson has an average duration of just 7 minutes, so it didn’t tire or bore him.

If you would like to delay lessons for a bit so you can allow your child time to indulge in other activities, you can certainly do so. Stage 1 takes 3 months, but it’s okay to take as long as 5 months. Although it’s an undeniable advantage for your child to start reading early, it isn’t a race.

Can toddlers be readers too?

This review proves that they can! We may not have been trained by phonics instruction when we were young, but our children can certainly be. It may sound strange trying to sound out certain words, but it will be great practice with your little one. It’s an awesome feeling to have your child relishing reading a short book in its entirety with gusto.

I would just like to point out again that this isn’t possible if you’re not willing to spend at least 15 minutes with your children every single day. This isn’t a program that will teach your child to read without your input and participation. You have to play an active role in your child’s reading development.
